Play Is a Sign of Safety
Seedling — an early exploration
The Vision: Zechariah envisions a city marked by total security and peace—a place where the vulnerable (the elderly and children) thrive, and where joyful play is the evidence of safety. Play is not a trivial distraction; it is a profound foretaste of the Kingdom of God.
The Problem: In our fallen world, adult life is dominated by performance, defensive posturing, anxiety, and self-preservation. We build relational trenches out of fear, pride, and the pressure to produce.
The Gospel Freedom: Jesus invites us to receive the Kingdom like little children (Mark 10:14–15). His finished work secures our identity, freeing us from the need to prove ourselves and allowing us to step out of our defensive postures into honest, peaceful fellowship.
The Spirit’s Empowerment: The Spirit produces joy, peace, and mutual delight, creating a community where we can rest and play without shame or competition.
Peace = secure, confident, undefended
Passages to explore: Zechariah 8:4–5; Mark 10:13–16; John 15:9–15; Romans 8:14–16.
Question to develop
How might receiving the Kingdom of God “like a little child” change our approach to community?
