Babylon Accumulates While New Jerusalem Heals

Seed — an idea to develop

•1 min

Babylon ultimately tells an account of humanity in which our hope is only in ourselves. High accumulation, high walls: we secure our future through what we can gather and what we can defend.

Babylon and New Jerusalem are rival visions of social existence. Babylon accumulates wealth and consumes human life; New Jerusalem receives abundance, and its river and tree are for the healing of the nations. The Christian alternative to catastrophe politics is therefore not simply preserving the present order, but imagining abundance, security, and power differently.

Connection to explore

Hadestown’s “Why do we build the wall?” offers a connection to explore: how walls and accumulation express an account of humanity in which our hope is only in ourselves.
